Two African destinations have been added to the latest list of World Heritage Sites. Namibia’s Sand Sea, the oldest desert in the world and the only one bordering on a coast, has finally made the cut. This massive area of shifting sand is famous for its massive dunes, which are slowly moving over a much older desert system, and recently saw the country earmarked as one of the top safari destinations in Africa. Niger’s iconic town of Agadez was also awarded the coveted status. Suitably called the gateway to the North African desert, it has existed since the 15th century and features, among many things, the tallest minaret built out of mud bricks.
