Strike: ASUU vows to fight on

Abraham - July 24, 2013

strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Tuesday said that it would not compromise until the Federal Government met its demands.

Chairman of the Federal University of Technology in Owerri, Dr Ikenna Nwachukwu, announced the stand at a news conference in Owerri.

Nwachukwu said the strike was aimed at repositioning and revitalising the country’s university system.

He said calling off the strike when the issues in contention had not been resolved would translate to supporting the collapse of the system.

“Four years after signing the agreement, ASUU, as a responsible union, employed every workable, peaceful and civilized means to make the government fulfil its own part of the agreement.

“But the government deliberately refused to honour key areas of the agreement. It is time for the implementation of the agreement as time for negotiation is over,” he said.

He expressed displeasure that the universities had continued to produce half-baked graduates who could not compete with their counterparts from other countries.

According to him, the public universities would not continue to operate in a shambles without infrastructure, laboratories and a conducive academic environment.

“ASUU-FUTO calls on all well-meaning Nigerians and civil organisations to prevail on the government of Nigeria to honour an agreement it freely entered into with ASUU.

“We stand on the part of truth and our cause is just,” Nwachukwu said.
