8 New Words Added to Oxford Dictionary

Oxford Dictionaries Online is adding eight words which recently came into usage in pop culture. Make sure you know them, before you use them in your daily conversation.

Twerk

Miley Cyrus

Derived from the ‘infamous’ Miley Cyrus’s VMA performance, ‘twerking’ means dancing in a provocative manner which involves thrusting hip movements.

Say: Miley Cyrus’s twerking was disgusting.


Don’t Say: I like twerking. Is it like tweeting?

 

Omnishambles

Omnishambles

This word was named as the Oxford Dictionary Word of 2012. Omnishambles is a situation where everything is shambolic.
Say: The budget this year was an ‘omnishambles’ budget.
Don’t Say: Omnishambles, what?

 

Selfie

Selfie is a picture taken of oneself with a smartphone.
Say: People who take selfies are narcissistic.

A smartphone that has a screen like a tablet.
Say: Phablets are too big. They don’t fit in your pockets.
Don’t Say: Are phablets new kind of tablets which are available at the chemist counter?

 

Digital Detox

Digital Detox is a period during which a person decides to stay away from Facebook, Twitter or any kind of social media.
Say: I think, I need a digital detox. I will now switch off my phone.
Don’t Say: Digital Detox? A new kind of Botox or what?

 

Flatforms
