'Tired' Bolt wins in Zurich

World and Olympic champion Usain Bolt started slowly but made up ground late in the race to win the 100m sprint at the Zurich Diamond League meeting on Thursday.

Running into a strong head-wind, the 27-year-old sprinted away in the final stretches of the race to record a time of 9.90s, edging out fellow Jamaican Nickel Ashmeade and American Justin Gatlin.

Ashmeade finished in second place with a time of 9.94s, with former Olympic and world champion Gatlin two hundredths of a second further back.

"I am tired," Bolt told the BBC after the race.

"But the good thing is that everybody else is tired. But I'm happy, I've come out victorious and I'm continuing winning."

Also victorious in the Swiss city was Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, the Jamaican who became the first woman ever to win world titles in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m at a World Championship when she managed the feat in Moscow earlier this month.

Fraser-Pryce won the 200m in Zurich in 22.40s in front of a capacity crowd of 26,000 spectators.

LaShawn Merritt, who won the World Championship title in the Russian capital, beat Grenada's 2011 world gold medallist Kirani James in the men's 400 metres in another high-profile race on the night.

Meseret Defar edged out Ethiopian compatriot Tirunesh Dibaba in the women's 5,000m, recording a time of 14:32.38s after taking the lead in the final bend.

Reigning world high jump champion Bohdan Bondarenko had another failed attempt on Javier Sotomayor's world record of 2.45m, eventually winning by a count-back with a height of 2.33m.

The Cuban's world record has stood since 1993 and the Ukrainian has failed in 11 attempts during the last two months to break the record.
