Daily Mail To Pay Uganda’s Prime Minister For Slander

U.K. tabloid The Daily Mail is well-known for its off-the-cuff remarks, rarely pulling punches when it attacks politicians, celebrities and whoever it considers as counter to its principles.

But this maverick approach has landed the paper in hot water - last year it claimed the Prime Minister of Uganda, Amama Mbabazi, siphoned millions of dollars off foreign aid. Yet the reports were inaccurate, though some of the PM’s staff have been implicated in the fraud. Nonetheless, the Daily Mail pointed at the wrong man and found itself losing a slander case in court. The newspaper has since published apologies for the report and also agreed to pay Mbabazi an unknown but “substantial” amount, as well as cover his legal costs.
