Legal Marijuana For Morocco

It is little known that the North African nation of Morocco is one of the world’s top producers of marijuana, grown in the country’s remote hills by poor farmers. In fact, Algeria recently complained about the tons of hashish - a marijuana-derived product - that flood over the border from its neighbour.

In the past Morocco has tried to stop the practice with slash-and-burn campaigns. But recently the government is instead considering legalising its cultivation, based on new proposals from growers, writes Bloomberg. The move would certainly help Morocco’s trade deficit and general economy, which are in bad shape. The aim is to move farmers, who have been growing the plant in Morocco’s north for centuries, away from drug syndicates and into legitimate business.

Attempt to change crops or destroy them have failed, while illegal crops can often cause great damage. In Nigeria illegal marijuana cultivation was recently blamed for an increase in deforestation, threatening the local chimp population.
