The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) said on Thursday in Akwa Ibom that it arrested a woman and 15 other people for allegedly selling her twin babies.
The state Commandant, Pedro Ideba, said at a news conference in Uyo that the suspect, from Mkpok in Onna Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom, was caught while allegedly selling the babies.
He alleged that the suspect sold the babies to a principal suspect who works at a maternity home in Oboma, Oyingbo Local Government Area of Rivers.
He said 15 persons, including a driver and a lady who pretended to be a house-keeper, had been arrested by the command.
Ideba said during investigation, intelligence officers of the NSCDC asked the mother (suspect) to call one of the buyers to come for the second baby at a reduced price, to enable the command to arrest her.
"She later confessed that there was another home at Umuagbahi in Akwuete area of Abia where young men also impregnate young girls who bear children as items of merchandise.
"All these arrests, numbering 16 persons, were handed over to National Agency for Prohibition, Trafficking in Persons and Other Related Matters, on Tuesday for prosecution.
"All these arrests had been made in partnership with other security agencies," he said.
The commandant said the corps arrested 23 tankers, 15 motorcycles, five tricycles, 15 outboard engines, 12 pumping machines, buses and cars in six months.
He said the command recovered PHCN and NITEL cables worth more than N60 million from some suspects arrested for acts of vandalism in Eket.
