A state government has confirmed that an attack by Islamist sect Boko Haram on Tuesday has resulted in the loss of at least 87 lives.

AFP reports that the attackers disguised themselves in military uniforms and set up checkpoints, killing any motorists who tried to escape.

According to the report, a number of houses and other buildings were also burnt during the attack.

"Eighty-seven bodies were recovered in the bush and our people are still searching for more," Saidu Yakubu of the Environmental Protection Agency in northeastern Borno state told journalists on Thursday.

CAJ News reports that more than 140 corpses have been found so far.

President Goodluck Jonathan imposed a state of emergency on Borno and two other states in May and launched a fierce military offensive against Boko Haram.
