Nick Mutuma is the only Kenyan acting in the forthcoming season of Shuga.
This season of Shuga is scheduled to be shot in Nigeria. Shuga is an HIV awareness campaign by MTV Base and the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, with NACA; the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; and UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund).
PEPFAR (The US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) has also expressed a commitment to participate.
Two lucky young actors who landed coveted roles in season 3 are Aigbodion Izien and Nnenna Udeh. This season will be directed by Half of a Yellow Sun director, Biyi Bandele. The two Nigerian actors won their parts in an online vote to find new acting talent for the acclaimed drama.
The show will (fittingly) air on 1 December 2013, also known as World Aids Day.
Biz community summarises the synopsis, "Fusing sexual health messaging with gripping storylines, Shuga is part of a powerful 360-degree mass media campaign designed to raise awareness about HIV prevention and teen pregnancy in Nigeria". The show also touches other topics, plaguing some African homes. It exposes the truths about domestic violence, teen pregnancy, women equality and many other 'taboo' issues.
Nick may have just opened a door for Kenyan actors hoping to find work on international projects.
