Worth the risk? Taiwanese woman undergoes drastic jaw reduction surgery

Abraham - November 06, 2013

A Taiwanese woman has done something out of the ordinary, even by cosmetic surgery standards, in a bid to shrink the size of her face - by shaving the bone structure of her face.According to a Sina report, the 26-year-old lass decided to undergo a procedure known as facial bone contouring after her face made her the butt of jokes.

At one point, she was even nicknamed 'big pancake face'.After undergoing the procedure, her face bloated up to the size of an inflated balloon but after a recovery period of a month and a half, the swelling went down and she emerged with a face that was distinctively sharper.

Despite yielding somewhat-successful results from the procedure, the woman issued a caution to others out there who may want to follow in her footsteps. She said that while being vain is perfectly normal, women should not go overboard in their pursuit of perfection.

The physician involved in the surgery said that jaw bone surgery is more complicated than other types of surgery in comparison, and because of that, the risk of complications is high. Highlighting the importance of finding a good surgeon, he said that just a little carelessness may lead to chin paralysis , an inability to open and close the mouth properly, facial nerve disorders and other problems.

In chin reduction surgery there is always a small chance of damaging the lower branch of the facial nerve that controls the lower lip, said Dr William Portuese, MD, a Seattle facial plastic surgeon. When damaged, patients experience loss of sensation and motor function in the affected area. If this nerve is cut, it can result in a temporary or permanent lower lip asymmetry, he said in a reply to a question posted on realself.com.
