A top lawyer in Malawi has warned that the trade in human genitalia is growing in the country. State prosecutor Cecilia Zangazanga has called for longer prison sentences for those caught dealing in body parts.
This comes as four people were sent to jail for a collective 26 years after being caught with genitalia stolen from a corpse at a local hospital. Nyasa Times reports that there has been a spike in crimes relating to the trade, including a businessman who is in hospital after his genitalia was cut off during an attack in April. Some blame poverty - body parts are in high demand and criminals are willing to pay lucrative amounts for them.
The foursome who were sent to jail stood to make around $25,000 for their contraband.
