Liberia To Crack Down On Police Bribes

Authorities in Liberia are taking police bribery very seriously, particularly since according to Transparency International, 77 percent of Liberians surveyed paid off law officers in the past year. Voice Of America writes that the revelation has caused an outcry in the country, where citizens say it is very common to be accused by police for nonexistent road violations.

The police then try to get a bribe, usually around $15 - the average daily wage of a commercial driver. Commercial vehicles in particular are being targeted and the practice is so common in the capital of Monrovia that it is referred to as “a small thing before you go”.

A police spokesperson said that any officer caught taking a bribe should be fired and face criminal charges. But others have pointed out that bribery is not unexpected, since Liberia’s police are routinely paid little and late.
