Rwandan Genocide Suspects Arrested, Convicted

It has been a busy week for the hunt of suspects involved in Rwanda’s 1994 genocide, in which over 800,000 people died.

French and Dutch authorities respectively arrested two men for suspicion of involvement in the atrocities. In the Netherlands, reports GlobalPost, police arrested an unnamed 36-year-old man on an international warrant. It is believed he played a key role in the ETO school massacre, where 2,000 people died.

AFP writes that a 75 year old man, Laurent Serubuga, was arrested in France - he is believed to have been a deputy army chief during the genocide. And at least one participant in this dark part of history was sent to jail: in the U.S. a court sentenced Beatrice Munyenyezi to 10 years behind bars, after which she’ll be deported to Rwanda. This is the first person convicted in the U.S. for involvement in the genocide.
