Sudanese President Flees Nigeria

Sudan’s President Omar al-Bashir has been warmly welcomed by numerous African countries, despite an international arrest warrant for his role in genocide and other crimes.

But the statesman had to cut short his most recent visit to Nigeria after rights groups pressured the government and even went to court for an arrest order.

Al-Bashir was in Nigeria for an African Union summit and the country was widely criticised for not arresting him.

Nigeria’s government defended its position, saying that al-Bashir was there on invitation of the AU and not Nigeria. But, according to various news sources including the Associated Press, the President must not have felt welcome as he left the country less than 24 hours since arriving. The local Sudanese embassy said that he had another engagement, but it is suspicious that he left in the middle of the two day summit.
