Nigeria’s roadmap for developing its space industry is on track, said authorities, who hoped the first Nigerian astronauts will be floating above the world by 2015.
The Guardian Nigeria reports that the National Space Research and Development Agency plans to start recruiting candidates in this year, with the goal of sending astronauts up with a foreign country within two years.
It also unveiled new initiatives that can aid private citizens in constructing satellites and expects the country’s first constructed satellite will be sent into orbit by 2018, with Nigeria’s first launch vehicle blasting off a decade later. But the agency pointed out that many of its plans rely on cooperation with other spacefaring nations such as Russia and the U.S.
