UK Demands Huge Payments From Nigerians, Ghanaians For Visas

Getting a visa to travel to a foreign country can already be expensive and often countries are accused of using the system to discriminate on the basis of income and even race. This is certainly what opponents to a new U.K.

pilot are saying - the country is planning to go ahead with a controversial system that could see some applicants pay as much $4,600 to apply for a visa, though the amount is refundable. British authorities want to impose the system on six countries, two of which are African, reports the Associated Press. Nigeria and Ghana are joined by India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Critics in these countries have called the move racist and in June Nigeria’s foreign minister said it was “discriminatory”.

A prominent British lawyer has indicated that he’ll take the case to the European Court of Human Rights, claiming it violates the EU’s constitution. But British authorities are pushing ahead with the pilot and said it may even expand to cover more countries.
