Lagos marathon date confirmed

This year's edition of the annual Lagos Beach Marathon will take place on October 1 as part of Nigeria's centenary celebrations.

Apart from the centenary celebrations, the marathon will also serve to raise awareness of the danger the country's coastlines are in, as well as providing a platform for sports, recreation, tourism to showcase its importance to the country.

"We shall be leveraging on our vast experience and relationship with the sports sector, entertainment industry and relevant stakeholders to attract widespread acceptance and participation in the event," the President of the Lagos Beach Marathon, Philip Obuesi said.

"The entry forms are free and we expect that over 1,000 runners will have picked the forms by the third week of September. Only 50 athletes participated in the first edition, which was part of the plan to create awareness for the ocean scourge and cervical cancer programme."

The prize money for this year's event has also increased, with the winner getting N100,000 instead of N75,000.

The race will start at the Lagos Bar Beach and end at the Lekki Beach.
