This woman took a year off Her marriage so she and her husband could sleep with other people

Abraham - May 13, 2015

Lessons from a year spent sowing wild oats

Robin Rinaldi did what many women dream of but few actually do: she took a year off from her marriage and made an agreement with her husband that they could both sleep with other people for a set period.

Rinaldi’s book, The Wild Oats Project, is a summary of what she learned during the year she spent in an open marriage. The idea came to her when her husband got a vasectomy after a long battle over whether they would have children — she wanted them, he didn’t. Faced with a future without a family, Rinaldi made a decision:
“I refuse to go to my grave with no children and only four lovers,” she wrote, “If I can’t have one, I must have the other.”
She also learned a lot about sex, and about her own body. Rinaldi spent much of the project in new-age sexual workshops and orgasmic meditation classes, so she came away a greater awareness of her sexuality.
“The sex was the classroom, but the sex was not the lesson,” she says. “Your body has wisdom, that is very powerful and can kind of show you your path, and you don’t always have to think it through or necessarily act based on other people’s rules.”
Still, Rinaldi wouldn’t necessarily recommend that other women take exactly the same path she did. Instead, she’d advise younger women to “sow your wild oats before you settle down — that’s a no-brainer.”

15 Words You Need to Eliminate From Your Vocabulary

Abraham - May 10, 2015
Newsprint is on life support, emojis are multiplying faster than hungry Gremlins, and 300 million people worldwide strive to make their point in 140 or fewer characters.

People don’t have the time or the attention span to read any more words than necessary. You want your readers to hear you out, understand your message, and perhaps be entertained, right? Here’s a list of words to eliminate to help you write more succinctly.

1. That

It’s superfluous most of the time. Open any document you’ve got drafted on your desktop, and find a sentence with that in it. Read it out loud. Now read it again without that. If the sentence works without it, delete it. Also? Don’t use that when you refer to people. “I have several friends that live in the neighborhood.” No. No, you don’t. You have friends who. Not friends that.

2. Went

I went to school. Or the store, or to church, or to a conference, to Vegas, wherever it is you’re inclined to go. Instead of went, consider drove, skated, walked, ran, flew. There are any number of ways to move from here to there. Pick one. Don’t be lazy and miss the chance to add to your story.

3. Honestly

People use honestly to add emphasis. The problem is, the minute you tell your reader this particular statement is honest, you’ve implied the rest of your words were not. #Awkward

4. Absolutely

Adding this word to most sentences is redundant. Something is either necessary, or it isn’t. Absolutely necessary doesn’t make it more necessary. If you recommend an essential course to your new employees, it’s essential. Coincidentally, the definition of essential is absolutely necessary. Chicken or egg, eh?

5. Very

Accurate adjectives don’t need qualifiers. If you need to qualify it? Replace it.
Very is intended to magnify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. What it does is makes your statement less specific. If you’re very happy? Be ecstatic. If you’re very sad, perhaps you’re melancholy or depressed. Woebegone, even. Very sad is a lazy way of making your point. Another pitfall of using very as a modifier? It’s subjective.Very cold and very tall mean different things to different people. Be specific. She’s 6’3″ and it’s 13 degrees below freezing? These make your story better while also ensuring the reader understands the point you’re making.

6. Really

Unless you’re a Valley Girl, visiting from 1985, there’s no need to usereally to modify an adjective. Or a verb. Or an adverb. Pick a different word to make your point. And never repeat really, or veryfor that matter. That’s really, really bad writing.
If you are visiting from 1985? Please bring the birth certificate for my Cabbage Patch Doll on your next visit. Thanks.

7. Amazing

The word means “causing great surprise or sudden wonder.” It’s synonymous with wonderful, incredible, startling, marvelous, astonishing, astounding, remarkable, miraculous, surprising, mind-blowing, and staggering. You get the point, right? It’s everywhere. It’s in corporate slogans. It dominated the Academy Awards acceptance speeches. It’s all over social media. It’s discussed in pre-game shows and post-game shows.
Newsflash: If everything is amazing, nothing is.

8. Always

Absolutes lock the writer into a position, sound conceited and close-minded, and often open the door to criticism regarding inaccuracies.Always is rarely true. Unless you’re giving written commands or instruction, find another word.

9. Never

See: Always.

10. Literally

Literally means literal. Actually happening as stated. Without exaggeration. More often than not, when the term is used, the writer means figuratively. Whatever is happening is being described metaphorically. No one actually “waits on pins and needles.” How uncomfortable would that be?

11. Just

It’s a filler word and it makes your sentence weaker, not stronger. Unless you’re using it as a synonym for equitable, fair, even-handed, or impartial, don’t use it at all.

12. Maybe

This makes you sound uninformed, unsure of the facts you’re presenting. Regardless of the topic, do the legwork, be sure, write an informed piece. The only thing you communicate when you include these words is uncertainty.

13. Stuff

This word is casual, generic even. It serves as a placeholder for something better. If the details of the stuff aren’t important enough to be included in the piece? Don’t reference it at all. If you tell your reader to take your course because they’ll learn a lot of stuff? They’re likely to tell you to stuff it.

14. Things

See: Stuff.

15. Irregardless

This doesn’t mean what you think it means, Jefe. It means regardless. It is literally (see what I did there?) defined as: regardless. Don’t use it. Save yourself the embarrassment.
Whether you’re ghostwriting for your CEO, updating a blog, selling a product, or finishing your master’s thesis, you need to keep your reader engaged. These 15 words are a great place to start trimming the fat from your prose. Bonus? You’ll sound smarter.

His son was murdered 9 years ago. Last week, He got an unexpected package in the mail.

Abraham - April 14, 2015
A father received the surprise of a lifetime when a bumper that his son was working on as he was murdered nine years ago randomly showed up at his shop in North Carolina.

John Brynarsky has been working on cars for 45 years, and before his son Chris was randomly murdered 9 years ago, he too had a knack for vehicles. Chris was a master custom painter, and he was in the middle of painting a bumper when an irate customer fatally shot him.
“He was shot, he fell over it, and it damaged it,” friend Mark Cosentino told USA Today
In honor of his friend, Cosentino repaired the bumper and put it back on the car, but not before writing a tribute to Chris on the inside.
“In memory of Christopher Brynarsky October 11th, 2006 11:45 AM," Cosentino said. "I just wanted to immortalize him. That was my way of doing it.”
Nearly nine years later, on Good Friday, the bumper suddenly resurfaced at Charlotte’s Hendrick Luxury Collision Center, and incredibly, the technician who removed it was none other than John, Chris’s father.
“It was, I didn't know what to do,” John Brynarsky, who noted that he still misses his son “everyday,” told USA Today. “I didn’t know what to think.”

Some Chinese Wives Buy Sex Dolls For Their Husbands

Abraham - April 14, 2015

She lay quietly on a narrow bed, greeting potential customers with an impassive stare and a disproportionately buxom form: meet "156", a stand-in companion for Chinese men with empty beds.
Named for her height, she is a high-quality sex doll made of thermoplastic elastomer, a rubbery material softer than silicone, with adjustable hands, a removable head and genitals, and available from specialist shops in Beijing for around US$2,500.

Liu - who did not want to give his full name - has one among the few possessions in his dimly lit studio apartment, deep in an industrial suburb of the capital.

Like millions in China who leave their hometowns to work in the cities, the 29-year-old automobile designer leads a bachelor's life during the week, returning to his wife and toddler in neighbouring Hebei province every weekend.
Liu has been married for more than a decade, and does not want to be unfaithful, but still needs to satisfy his sexual appetites.
"Honestly, it is very easy to just pay a little money to find a woman in China, but I simply cannot bring myself to cheat on my wife, so I have never considered it," he said with a nervous laugh.

But a blow-up alternative was not an option. "There was no way I would have sex with that kind of cheap inflatable plastic," he explained.
Instead he forked out 15,800 yuan, almost a month's pay, for his more realistic Chinese-made "156".
Her removable parts make cleaning or replacement easier, but despite lengthy prior research - Liu can explain subtle differences between an exhaustive list of Chinese and foreign doll brands - he was disappointed.

"As an industrial designer I can't neglect the lack of realistic details," he lamented. "So I just used it a few times."
"The only way a doll is better than a woman is that it won't resist, so people can do whatever they want with it," he added.
Liu bought his doll from Micdolls in Beijing, where salesman Yi Jiange said proudly: "Most people think the dolls are more attractive than real women."

They come bald, with customers buying wigs for them according to their own preferences.

Psychologists Say Power Does 4 Crazy Things to Your Mind

Abraham - April 05, 2015
Who doesn't desire power?
There's a little Frank Underwood in all of us.
At the beginning of "House of Cards,"Kevin Spacey's character explains why power beats money
Money is the McMansion in Sarasota that starts falling apart after 10 years. Power is the old stone building that stands for centuries. I cannot respect someone who doesn't see the difference.
But should you find and hold power — as Underwood so deliciously does — it's going to do some really weird things to your perception of yourself and others.
Here's what the research says:

1. If you feel powerful, you're more inspired by yourself than anybody else.

According to a 2015 study led by Gerben A. Van Kleef at the University of Amsterdam, powerful people find themselves more inspiring than anybody else. In a study of 140 undergraduates, he found that people who agreed highly to statements like "I can get others to do what I want" were more inspired by talking about their own life-changing experiences than hearing other people discuss theirs.
To Research Digest blogger Alex Fradera, it's indicative of self-sufficiency.
"As a matter of course, powerful people don't expect others to fulfill their needs, and may therefore find it difficult to consider anyone else a worthy source of inspiration," he writes. "It's a little like a child for whom no one in the playground is up to scratch, so they become their own best friend."

2. If you feel powerful, you're the first to act.

In a 2003 study led by Columbia University psychologist Adam Galinsky, people who felt more powerful than their peers were more likely to take a card in a game of blackjack, fix an annoying fan in a room, and take action in social dilemmas. A 2007 study coauthored by Galinsky added to that theme, finding that powerful people are more likely to act first in a negotiation.
In 2012, the University of Texas' Jennifer A. Whitson found an explanation as to why: Powerful people are less likely to perceive — and remember — constraints to their goals.
It's like how eagles and alligators evolved to have their eyes close together.
"The vision of predators is fixated on their object of pursuit — their prey — leaving little visual room for unexpected danger or potential threats in their surroundings," she and her authors write. "This directed focus allows them to pounce into action to secure their meal."
Same for CEOs.

3. If you feel powerful, you're more likely to cheat.

It's not that men are more disposed to having sex outside of their marriages than women.
According to a 2011 study led by Joris Lammers at Tilburg University in the Netherlands, it's that powerful people are more likely to cheat.
His team surveyed 1,561 professionals, asking how high up in their organizations they were and their history or interest in cheating.
"Results showed that elevated power is positively associated with infidelity because power increases confidence in the ability to attract partners," they wrote. "This association was found for both actual infidelity and intentions to engage in infidelity in the future."
Gender didn't matter.
Powerful women were just as likely to have or pursue affairs as powerful men. This goes against a commonly held assumption about cheating. It's not that men are inherently more likely to cheat than women, it's just that men are more likely to hold powerful positions.
"As a social psychologist, I believe that the situation is everything and that the situation or instance is often stronger than the individual," Lammers said in a statement. "As more and more women are in greater positions of power and are considered equal to men, then familiar assumptions about their behavior may also change."

4. If you feel powerful, you feel distant from other people.

It happens for a few reasons:
• People become close to one another when they are "symmetrically dependent" on one another and have repeated interactions, Magee and Smith say. You and your boss aren't symmetrically dependent; you depend on her approval more than she does yours. But you and the other people on her team are symmetrical, so you're likely to become close over time.
• Research indicates that powerful people don't need to associate with others in the same way.
• Powerful people have to think more abstractly than everybody else. They're concerned with meeting goals more than developing relationships.
So the isolation is a result of the social situation that power puts you in — and the need to get things done.
It works for Mr. Underwood.

Sorry But This Is The Salary You Must Earn to Afford a Home in America

Abraham - March 10, 2015

A homebuyer needs to earn $48,603 to afford a median-priced property, report says

To afford a typical house in the U.S., a homebuyer needs a minimum salary of $48,603 as well as a 20% downpayment, according to new research from mortgage publisher HSH.com.
HSH.com calculated the minimum salary a buyer must earn to pay the principal, interest, insurance and taxes associated with home purchases across 27 metropolitan areas, using fourth-quarter data from the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and average interest rates for fixed-rate, 30-year mortgages.
“Home prices in metro areas throughout the country continue to show solid price growth, up 25% over the past three years on average,” NAR chief economist Lawrence Yun told HSH.
San Francisco continues to top the list of most unaffordable cities, requiring a buyer to be paid $142,448, while New York City only requires $87,535; Boston, $80,049; Washington, D.C., $77,394 and Chicago $54,346.

Revealed: World's Most Expensive Cities

Abraham - March 04, 2015

A new report released today lists the top 10 most expensive cities in the world - and two major Australian cities are among them.

According to the EIU's survey, which ranks 133 cities using New York as a base, Sydney is now the fifth most expensive city in the world to live, followed by Melbourne at number six.

Interestingly, New York, London and Tokyo, once thought to be the most expensive cities in the world, have all fallen off the top 10, while Singapore, Paris, Oslo, and Zurich have retained their top 4 status for the second year in a row.
But among the top ten there was a bit of a shift. Ten years ago, Seoul was barely rounding out the top 50; now, the city is ranked alongside Hong Kong, which was once the third most expensive city. Though the majority of cities at the higher end of the study are in Asia, Western Europe and Australia, New York City rose from 26th to 22nd.
In Singapore, the study found, a loaf of bread, a bottle of wine, and a pack of cigarettes will together cost the equivalent of $39.11.
1. Singapore
2. Paris
3. Oslo
4. Zurich
5. Sydney
6. Melbourne
7. Geneva
8. Copenhagen
9. Hong Kong
10. Seoul

'I started screaming outside'- Single Mom; Winner Of $188 million Lottery Shares Her Story [Powerball]

Abraham - February 25, 2015
Marie Holmes, the 26-year-old single mother from North Carolina who was one of three $188 million winners of a $564 million jackpot, says she ran outside her home when she realized she won.
“I started screaming outside,” Holmes recalled today on "Good Morning America."  "I said, ‘We made it!'"
Holmes, of Shallotte, North Carolina, was fixing her children breakfast the day after the Feb. 11, drawing hen she saw the winning numbers on Facebook.
“I just happened to check Facebook and my friend had a post up with the numbers on it so I looked at the numbers and I had my numbers in my hand and I was like these are the same numbers on my ticket,” Holmes said on “GMA.” “Then I started screaming and stuff and my kids ran away from me and said I scared them.”

Holmes said her mom, who purchased the winning ticket for Holmes on her way to church, was the first person she called.
While her mom was convinced because she saw the numbers in person, Holmes says the rest of her family did not believe she had won the $564.1 million jackpot, the fifth largest lottery prize in U.S. history.
“I called my sister and I told her…she was like, ‘Stop playing with me. I’m asleep. You didn’t hit the lottery. Send me a picture,’” Holmes said. “So I sent her a picture and then I called my uncle and told him the same thing. He told me, ‘Man I’m at work don’t be playing with me.’”
Holmes had been living with six other people –- including her four children, ages 9 months to 7 years –- prior to her lottery win.
“I don’t have to worry about staying with my mom anymore. I can have my own place,” she said. "We're going to have our own everything."
“They can have their own house and stuff so it’s going to impact not only mine but the people around me," Holmes said of her family.

20 English Words To Avoid When in Other Countries

Abraham - February 21, 2015
If you travel abroad frequently for work, or if you have an e-commerce store with customers from all over the world, it’s worth noting that there are a number of English words that, phonetically, don’t work in other countries and can lead to double entendre or unintended offence territory. Here are 20 of them to help you ensure that your communication isn’t lost in translation.
France

Preservative. Avoid asking about preservatives in France; you’ll probably be met with strange looks. It means ‘condom’ in France.
Norway
Pick. If you’re visiting Norway, don’t use the word ‘pick’. Your Norwegian colleague is unlikely to be impressed - it means ‘dick’ over there.
Fitter. Does your business specialise in fitness products? Be mindful that in Norway, the word ‘fitte’ refers to a woman’s genitals.
Turkey
Peach. Going to Turkey? Avoid asking for a peach in the supermarket or anywhere else for that matter. It means ‘bastard’ in Turkish.
Germany
Gift. ‘Never look a gift horse in the mouth’, we’re told; perhaps more so in Germany where the word means ‘poison’.
Latte. In Germany, latte doesn’t mean the frothy, milky concoction you get from your local Starbucks. It means ‘erect penis’ in some German quarters.
Korea
Salsa. Out for a Mexican in Korea? It’s probably best not to ask for salsa: it means ‘diarrhoea’ in Korean.
Sweden
Speed. Try not to talk about speed when in the company of others in Sweden. It means ‘fart’.
Bump.  If you’ve had the misfortune of a bump on your car, note that the word ‘bump’ in Swedish means ‘dump’.
Speed bump.  Put the above two words together and you have the phrase ‘speed bump’, which in Swedish means fart dump.
Kiss. If you ask your Swedish host or hostess for a kiss, they might very well direct you to the toilets. In Swedish, the word means ‘pee’.
Portugal
Pay Day. If you’re in Portugal, refrain from singing with happiness that it’s ‘pay day’. No one will be impressed. In Portuguese it means “I farted”.
Exquisite. Extend a compliment to your Portuguese host by describing something belonging to them as ‘exquisite’ and you might be met with askance looks: ‘esquisito’ in Portuguese means ‘weird’.
Hungary
Cookie. If you’re visiting Hungary, whether on business or for pleasure, avoid asking for a cookie. It means ‘small penis’ in Hungarian.
Japan
Jerry. It’s perhaps a little late for Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, but if you’re in Japan, avoid using the word – it means ‘diarrhoea’ over there.
France
Bra. Do you sell luxury underwear? Whilst you and I might initially understand the word to mean a garment that covers the breasts, if you’re in France your French colleagues might think you’re selling arms. Literally.
Italy
Tremendous. Refrain from boasting about the tremendous prices you offer your clients. In this country, ‘tremendo’ is the word for ‘terrible’.
Netherlands
Bill.  Asking for the bill might raise a few guffaws in the Netherlands: ‘bil’ means ‘buttocks’ there.
Lager. It might confuse your Dutch colleagues if you were to ask for a ‘lager’ when having a few drinks with them after work. Lager means ‘storage’ in Dutch.
Spain
Cool.  The word cool is too close for comfort to the Spanish word 'culo'; a crude term for 'bum'. Best avoided.
That some words can be misinterpreted not only has relevance for those who frequently go abroad on business,  but as Tictail point out, also for online businesses where ‘borderless’ transactions take place. So if you’ve often wondered why your “exquisite Madagascan chocolates” fly like hotcakes everywhere in the world except Brazil and Portugal, perhaps you now have the answer: weird, dodgy chocolates just won’t sell.

Remember The 17 Yr Old High School Investor Who Made $72Million, Actually Decieved Us; It's Fake

Abraham - December 17, 2014

mohammad-islam-620xa

You know that thing about how if something sounds too good to be true, it usually is? Well, yeah, that’s totally true.

Take, for instance, the fantastical tale of Mohammed Islam, the “genius” New York high school investor who reportedly made $72 million while playing the stock market with his investor pals at Stuyvesant High School. Amazing, right? New York magazine did a glowing profile of him and everything in its “Reasons to Love New York” section.

Well, not long after that story blew up, financial experts said, “um, no.”

“Based on his press clippings, 17-year-old high school senior Mohammed “Mo” Islam has already achieved a level of market mastery beyond most investor’s wildest dreams,” wrote Yahoo! Finance on Monday morning.

“Assume Mo started investing with $1,000 when he was 10. To accumulate $72 million strictly through his trading acumen he would need to average over 500% annualized returns over the last 7 years,” the site wrote. “That means he would have had to double his money every one to two months for 7 years straight… to net 500% per year for 7 straight years Mo would have to be the greatest trader in history. Ever. By far. No such creature has ever existed in financial markets and it’s not for lack of trying.”

By the end of the day Monday, the whole thing unraveled. “EXCLUSIVE: New York Mag’s Boy Genius Investor Made It All Up,” read the headline from the New York Observer, which sat down with a disgraced Islam and pal Damir Tulemaganbetov to let the pair come clean.

The actual amount they made trading? Zero. Nada. Zilch. Surrounded by a team of four from the crisis management firm they’ve hired, Islam admitted that he made the whole thing up. A friend of Islam’s father who works at New York hooked the 17-year-old up with the reporter. In the piece, Islam appears to say that his returns are in the “eight figures,” but admitted to the Observer that he’s invested nothing and made nothing.

“So it’s a total fiction?” the Observer asked.
